Scope and Contents

The collection consists of postcards depicting Kansas locations, including cities, towns, buildings, churches, schools, libraries, universities and colleges, military installations, prisons, hotels, bridges, parks, museums, monuments, agriculture, farms, mining, transportation, tourism, and other landmarks. Many postcards contain handwritten correspondence on the reverse, while others are unused or contain only publisher or descriptive information. The collection also includes duplicate postcards and postcard booklets. The postcards date from the twentieth century with the bulk of materials dating approximately from 1907 to 1970.

Conditions Governing Use

The copyright law of the United States (Title 17, United States Code) governs the making of photocopies or other reproductions of copyrighted material. Under certain conditions specified in the law, libraries and archives are authorized to furnish a photocopy or other reproduction. One of these specific conditions is that the photocopy or reproduction is not to be "used for any purpose other than private study, scholarship, or research." Abstract

This collection consists of promotional and real photo postcards depicting historical Kansas scenery, communities, landmarks, and institutions. The postcards date from approximately 1906 to 1997 with the bulk of materials dating from 1907 to 1970. Many postcards contain handwritten correspondence. The collection was transferred to Fort Hays State University from the University of Kentucky in 2024.

Arrangement

The postcards are arranged alphabetically by county. Postcards within each county are arranged in the order in which they were received.

Custodial History

This collection was transferred to Fort Hays State University from the University of Kentucky Special Collections Research Center in 2024. Many postcards bear a University of Kentucky Library stamp and contain correspondence to or from individuals in Kentucky.

Processing Information

The postcards were received in geographic alphabetical order by county and were transferred to plastic sleeves for protection. The postcards were assigned sequential numbers for identification and inventory purposes. Information recorded includes the postcard title or subject, location, date when available, correspondence appearing on the reverse, and publisher or manufacturer information. Duplicate postcards were noted in the collection inventory.
