This photo album contains images documenting George F. Sternberg’s experience at Fort Hays State University and his work with students and graduates, such as George Pearce and Myrl Walker, at expedition sites.

Paleontology activities include fossil dig sites, fossil packing, fossil specimens on display, specimen models, as well as landscape and geological features. A dig in Clark County, Kansas took place on the Swayze Ranch, and members of the family appear in several images. Another dig in Wyoming features some identified individuals conducting excavation, packing, and transport of fossils. Photos also depict archaeological materials such as arrowheads and petroglyphs found at dig sites.

Personal photos consist of interior and exterior views of the George F. Sternberg home at 603 Elm Street in Hays and the surrounding neighborhood. There are also several images featuring Sternberg family members. A handful of Christmas Cards from friends feature their respective children.

Statement of Harmful Content

This album is known to contain photographic depictions of Indigenous Americans that may be harmful, offensive, or outdated. Additionally, the album contains a real photo postcard of the Whiteford Indian Burial Pit that contains images of Indigenous remains that were repatriated to the Pawnee Nation by the State of Kansas in 1990.
