Scope and Contents The Bowen Collection comprises the greatest piece of the Tim Johnson collections. Thomas Mead Bowen was born near the present site of Burlington, Iowa on October 26, 1835. He attended the public schools and the academy at Mount Pleasant, Iowa. He later studied law, was admitted to the bar in 1853 and began his law practice in Iowa. He was elected a member of the Iowa House of Representatives in 1856, and then moved to Kansas in 1858. During the Civil War, he served in the Union Army...
