Scope and Contents

The Currey Archive includes the personal papers and library of Dr. Cecil B. Currey. Most of the items pertain to military history with an emphasis on the American Revolution, Civil War, World War I, World War II, the Korean War and the Vietnamese Conflict. Although most of the Currey Archive is in print, other types of media include microfilm, photographs, tapes, slides, artifacts, etc. Correspondence, memoranda, briefing papers, telegrams, officers’ reports, transcripts of interviews, declassified Army documents and many other documents add dimension to this unique collection. A particular highlight of the archive are two letters written by Benjamin Franklin.

Biographical / Historical

World War II and Korean War - U.S. Marine Corps and U.S. Air Force - James Brown enlisted in the Marine Corps in 1942. After his advanced infantry training, he joined the Second Battalion, "E" Company, 2nd Marine Division, 8th Marines. Originally sento to Iceland, then on to the Pacific theater after Guadalcanal. On 21, November, 1943 he participated in the initial landing on the island of Betio, part of the Tarawa Atoll. He was wounded here, but later returned to his unit. He also participated in the initial landing at Saipaw in June 1944 where he was again wounded. He returned to his unit the ssame day it debarked for the July 24 landing on the island of Tinian. Mr. Brown believed Tinian was the most grueling for his unit. Constant fighting and little rest describes the 2nd Battalion's role. On Tinian he suffered his third and final wound, afterwhich, he was sent back to the states.. He was discharged from the Marine Corps in 1945. In 1946, Mr. Brown joined the Air Force reserve, where he remained until called to active duty for the Korean Conflict.
