Scope and Contents

This record group consists of correspondence, reports, speeches, legal documents, land leases, and other materials from the administration of William A. Lewis, who served as the second president of the Western Branch of the Kansas State Normal School starting in 1913, through its name changes to Fort Hays Kansas State Normal School in 1914, to Kansas State Teachers College of Hays in 1923, and to Fort Hays Kansas State College in 1931, until his resignation in 1933.

Administrative Biography

President William Alexander Lewis was appointed by the newly created Kansas Board of Educational Administration in 1913. Prior to his appointment, he was a professor of industrial eduation and director of the State Demonstration Farm at the University of Utah. Lewis oversaw the development of an independent teacher's college at Fort Hays. Under his leadership, enrollment, student life, degree programs, faculty, administration, university publications, and campus buildings expanded. The institution was renamed Fort Hays Kansas State Normal School (1914), Kansas State Teachers College of Hays (1923), and Fort Hays Kansas State College (1931). Lewis resigned in the spring of 1933 following a heart attack. Lewis Field Stadium was named in his honor in 1936. He died on October 10, 1933.
