Series II: Fossil Lists and Field Notes, 1923-1963
Scope and Contents
This series contains fossil lists, field notes, diaries, notebooks, maps, and other materials created or collected by George F. Sternberg relating to fossil hunting expeditions dating from the early 1910s to the early 1960s.
The fossil lists consist of paper records detailing fossil specimens discovered, excavated, and prepared by George F. Sternberg and his colleagues. The lists typically note the fossil species, the location where the fossil was located, the person who made the discovery, and other identifying information. Notes further indicate if the specimen
was offered to the Fort Hays Kansas State College Museum or sold to another institution.
The diaries, field notes, and maps document Sternberg's fossil hunts with the bulk of materials covering expeditions led by George F. Sternberg. A small selection of materials date to the Sternberg family's fossil hunts in eastern Alberta during the 1910s. Individuals who participated in the fossil hunts are sometimes indicated. Field notes may indicate particular features of the terrain, or location where an excavation took place. Several field notebooks contain a small number of entries by Sternberg's colleagues and associates.
