Sternberg Negatives, 1950-1960

This file contains 299 photographic negatives attributed to George F. Sternberg. The negatives document Sternberg’s curation of the Museum of Natural History at Fort Hays State with artifacts, displays and paintings. The original museum was located in McCartney Hall on the campus of Fort Hays Kansas State College. The museum’s name was later changed to Sternberg Museum and the museum moved to its present location in 1998.

Taxidermied animals and birds were included in the museum along with fossils and specimens discovered during archaeological expeditions. The largest discovery was titled “Fish within a fish” and was excavated by Sternberg. This collection includes images of an expedition near Elkader, Kansas. William “Bill” Eastman was recruited to assist Sternberg and he created several paintings in the museum. Eastman later became a faculty member at the University.
