Back: History of Arkalalah, Each year Arkansas City holds a two day fall festival to celebrate Halloween called Arkalalah - Ark being the first syllable from the "gala event". The Arkalalah idea originated back in 1928 by enterprising citizens - C. M. Boggs, Jogn Floyd and Pat Summerfield. Their intentions were to entertain the youth of the city at Halloween time. The celebration attracts over 35,000 visitors to our city every year. There are 2 days of fun and frolic. A queen is elected from the Sophomore class of the Arkansas City Junior College by secret ballot. She reigns over the 2 day celebration. On the second day stunts and racing events are held for children 12 to 16 years of age. We have a giant 2 mile parade - Saddle Clubs - some 30 school bands - beautiful floats. Also nationally known entertainment is brought to town. It's Kansas' Largest original celebration of the year. Handwritten: Dear Gail: I am leaving Sat. 15th for Butte - Rich cant get off - with you were going along. Audrice. |
