John Greenleaf Whittier was born December 17, 1807, in the east parish of Haverhill, Essex County, Massachusetts, in a house built by his great-great-grandfather, Thomas Whittier, in 1688. The house is not unlike thousands of the pioneer homes which exist in New England, but few are so excellently preserved and none is so deservedly famous, for this is the homestead which Whittier describes in his "Snow-Bound," and this single dwelling has thus become in literature a type of the pioneer New England home.
