Biographical / Historical
World War II - joined the Navy in 1924, transferred to the Coast Guard and chased rum runners. During World War II - assigned to U.S.S. Admiral Averly (AP123) troop transport - thousands at a time. Saw action at Salerno, Normandy, Phillipine invastions. Not like the movies - no nets into bobbing boats. Hit by a kamikaze off the Phillipines - 30 dead - too fast to be afraid. Very business-like. Social history - worst part of the war was serving under 90-day officers - very resentful after 40 years.
