Biographical / Historical
31st Infantry Regiment – 17 – sent to the Philippines in 1941. Saw action during the Bataan campaign, fighting often hand to hand, poor equipment – 5 out 6 grenades were duds. Fought with sailors and airmen without planes. Food – rice balls. Lost every horse and mule; malaria and dysentery ; wounded twice slightly. Taken prisoner – “Death March” only 38 out of 50 in his group made it – Japs shot those who fell out, some let natives help. Transferred to northern Japan in 1944. War was over when the Japs abandoned camp, Air Force dropped food – went into town after their Red Cross packages.
