The John W. Gustad Collection includes publications by Gustad, personal photographs, greeting cards, letters and correspondence from his time as president at Fort Hays State College.
Biographical / Historical
John W. Gustad was born in 1922 in St. Paul, Minnesota. He graduated from Macalester College with B.A. in 1943 and from the University of Minnesota with his M.A. in 1948. In 1949 he received a PhD. In Psychology also from the University of Minnesota. From 1943-1946 he served in the U.S. Navy. Between 1947 and 1960 Gustad taught psychology at the University of Minnesota, Vanderbilt University, and Alfred University. While at Alfred University he became Dean of the College of Liberal Arts until 1963 when he was hired as Provost of the New College in Florida. In 1966 he was hired as Associate Dean of the College of Arts and Sciences at Ohio Date University and then sat on the Nebraska State College Board from 1968-1969. In 1969 he became the 6th President of Fort Hays State College. Gustad served as president until his retirement in 1975. Through his career Gustad was a prolific author publishing on educational psychology and higher high education. John W. Gustad was married to Dorris Adams Gustad and had two children with her. He died in 1978.
